About Me

My name is Martyn Jones and I'm also known as GeekTeacher on the web as I'm a former secondary ICT and Computing teacher.

Although I took early retirement in August 2011. I still do some part-time teaching of computing and programming at primary schools, but my new found passion since 2009 has been birding and bird photography.

I am by no means and never will be an birding expert, but I do love the pastime and particularly like taking bird photographs which I put on my own personal Birding Scrapbook blog and Flickr sites. All the photos in this blog will eventually be my own and they will be constantly updated as I replace some of my earlier efforts with ones taken by my latest camera gear.

I am heavily involved with my local birding club, Leigh Ornithological Society (L.O.S.), where I run the website and Facebook groups, and I co-ordinate the L.O.S. Young Birders' Club which has a team of five regulars and another four associate helpers who visit local primary schools to spread the word about birds, wildlife, conservation and nature in general.  We do various activities in schools including learning how to identify birds and making feeders. We also take groups of schoolchildren on fieldtrips in the Leigh area.

Finally, I have organised two Open Days for the L.O.S. in recent years which we hope will become an annual event.  We had slideshows by four local well-known photographers, a Barn Owl box and nestbox camera display and a number of local conservation groups had stalls explaining the work they are doing in our area.  The event was opened by the Mayor of Wigan Borough and was visited by our local MP, Andy Burnham.
